Switch 2, the ambitious handheld gaming console from Nintendo is confirmed to launch in the first half of 2025. The Joy-Con on the original Switch made playing multiplayer games a lot easier. A new Nintendo patent filed on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) suggests that the company is exploring the idea of using your smartphone as a controller for the Switch 2.
As per the patent outline, smartphones can be virtually connected to the Switch 2 by scanning a QR code on a television paired to the Switch 2 and then using the phone’s touch screen like a controller, similar to some of the retro video game emulators. This will enable Switch 2 users to quickly transform their smartphone into an additional controller, and it also eliminates the requirement of owning multiple controllers.

While the patent file nowhere mentions Switch 2, given the expected launch timeline, it makes sense to assume that Nintendo is at least exploring something like this, although, it might just remain an on-paper concept.
While a serious gamer will never part away from a dedicated controller in favour of a smartphone-based digital controller, this idea itself is a lot encouraging, especially for those, who occasionally play multiplayer games and don’t want to invest in an expensive controller.
The Switch 2, which will be a successor to the Switch is likely to launch in the first quarter of 2025. The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to be powered by a custom NVIDIA chip paired with an 8-inch screen, which makes it slightly bigger than the 7-inch screen on the current Switch OLED. In terms of look and feel, the Switch 2 is expected to mimic the Switch with a slightly bigger form factor and battery.
