Backbone has officially entered the Indian market with the launch of Backbone One, a premium gaming controller that snaps into Android and iOS devices and transforms them into handheld gaming consoles. With a starting price of Rs 7,769 for the lightning variant, the controller is currently available for purchase via Amazon, while the second-generation model costs Rs 12,400, and comes in both USB-C and lightning variants.
“Over the past few years, we have seen a spike in competitive mobile gaming in India, which is why we are all the more excited to introduce the Backbone One to India, a device that redefines mobile gaming. We want to be an intrinsic part of India’s growing gaming community and enable gamers with the best tools to enhance their experience and give them a competitive edge,” said Maneet Khaira, CEO of Backbone, in a media statement.
The Backbone One is a plug-and-play device, and requires no additional configuration. However, it also comes with a companion app for both Android and iOS devices, which allows further customisation and supports various cloud gaming services. There is also a PlayStation Edition of the Backbone One, inspired by the PS DualSense and can also be used to play console games.
The controller itself consists of analogue triggers, responsive thumbsticks, and a redesigned D-pad, and it has been designed with magnetic adapters to deliver a comfortable fit for phones of various sizes. While it is compatible with most smartphone games, it also officially supports titles like Call of Duty: Mobile, Genshin Impact, Minecraft, Diablo Immortal, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
Unlike some of the smartphone controllers, the Backbone One has no battery, but has a 3.5mm headphone jack, allowing users to pair their wired earphones/headphones while gaming for a low-latency experience, and there is also a USB-C/lightning port, which can charge the phone while playing games.
