One of the best video game stores – Good Old Games, popularly known as GOG recently started a new “Preservation Program” for retro PC games dedicated to making them playable on modern systems ‘now and in the future’.
GOG says the Preservation Program “ensures classic games remain playable on modern systems, even after their developers stopped supporting them.” These games are DRM free and come with dedicated tech support, which can help you fix issues when trying to install or play these titles.
In a blog post about the new program, the game store says that it will use its own resources to maintain compatibility with modern and future systems. Currently, GOG’s Preservation Program features 100 titles, which include the likes of the original Diablo, System Shock 2, Resident Evil 1-3, Heroes of Might and Magic 3. The company also said that it plans to add more titles in the coming months.
In case you are unaware, all games available on GOG are DRM-free, meaning gamers can download and install them wherever and whenever they want. Unlike modern video game titles, these games do not need to be connected to a central server and are free from the risk of the publisher suddenly switching off the game server.
When you buy a game from GOG that is part of the Preservation Program, the company says gamers can expect it to work on current and future PC configurations and that it will be the “best and most complete” version when it comes to compatibility, manuals, DLCs and bonus content.
Currently, if you install a retro game on your modern Windows machine, chances are that you will often run into some sort of compatibility issue or the game itself might crash and not run in the first place. GOG’s Preservation Program aims to fix that and make these older titles playable even if their publishers abandon them.
